Intro
After announcement of the M2 Pro coming in the guise of the new Mac Mini, I decided it was at last time to upgrade my long-standing 2017 iMac Pro. I immediately ordered a 12 Core (8 Performance, 4 Efficiency) M2 Pro Mac Mini with the standard 19 Core GPU. This was packaged with 32GB of main memory and a 512GB SSD.
It came with Ventura installed and I fought it for two days trying to get reliable glitch free audio from my legacy Digigrid IOS sound interface hardware. I had problems with the audio interface UI and when I did get things working, I could hear dropouts on simple playback.
I concluded that my issues were maybe two-fold. Ventura and Waves Soundgrid Studio were not getting on and secondly, maybe I should have opted for the 10Gbit network interface (option on the M2 Pro Mac Mini) which would have maybe addressed the audio network glitching in Soundgrid.
I will never know… after two days I took the M2 Pro Mac Mini back to the Apple store in Reading and exchanged it for an M1 Max Mac Studio running on Monterey. The Mac Studio has been a much better experience and I will keep it.
What are the performance differences between the M2 Pro and M1 Max Mac Studio and why am I much happier with this solution? How do the latest Apple Silicone systems stack up against the older Intel 10 Core Xeon system with top end Vega 64 GPU found in the iMac Pro?

    honestly I think there is a lot of misleading "wrong" information in your video dude :-) logic (as most other daws nowadays) is a "hybrid" or "dual" buffer daw and has been for a very long time. this means that changing the i/o buffer should not make a real difference when not live software monitoring a track and only playing back or mixing. when not monitoring a track the process buffer range (second "dual" buffer size) is used for processing. the main drawback of a big processing buffer is that you get latency between what you see and do with your mouse and when you hear it. cheers!

    • @RobnDob
      @RobnDob 9 днів тому

      dude if you're seeing latency between a higher buffer size when using your mouse its maybe the computer your using as a higher buffer size does not affect compute performance at all. the only latency you'll get is when recording. max buffer size is to support more mixing activities and lower is for recording so changing the buffer size absoulety affects these 2 activities. ive been recording since the first protools in 96 and can tell you the buffer situation has never changed even with max ram and high cpu.

    • @mkaudiostuff
      @mkaudiostuff 6 днів тому

      @@RobnDob hey there, let me explain further: think of the buffer size as something like a UPS driver delivering packages: it's the interval how often he comes back to you to grab your packages and drive them to somebody else (your interface converters). one big package with a lot of small ones in it would is the big buffer for which he has to wait for all those small packages to be ready first before he can leave. the more often he comes the faster all those small packages are delivered but he is definitely working more, the less he comes the longer it takes till all your packages are delivered but he is more relaxed. when you have a big buffers size it simply takes longer until your converters get the audio to convert (which will then hit your ears) after you changed something in your daw/plugins with your mouse or however! cheers & love from germany!

    I run mostly Ableton 11 and can just about get by with my mac pro 3,1 8 core machine , but I’m finally looking to get a new machine for music / video , looking at the refurb market its a real toss up between a studio m1 max and m2 pro mini , both are similar price in the UK , but leaning towards the studio for its extra memory / ports , i think both can handle my audio workflow while standing on their heads so i dont really need the extra power of the M2 . Thanks for the video !

    Can you recomend the MD 435 for voiceover and Audiobook production? My room isn’t bad, but not fully protected. Because of that, I wanted to go with a dynamic mic. I own already own the Sennheiser e865.

    Mark, How are you finding the performance of the MBP M3 in comparison with the new distribution of performance and efficiancy cores. Is memory now becoming more a factor now over processing. Great vid. Im making the jump to M Series from Pentium but prices for high end M1's are nearly the same as the M3 pros/Max's

    Your second test with the three waves plug-in was not the same because you had them split across different tracks..using different cores by default. All plugs in one track by default uses a single core.

    All the calculations are done by Apple. Obviously, they are smarter than everyone on and visiting this channel including myself. But then a sudden death always happens... And when it happens, PC laptops can cope with just buying another SSD module. But not Macbooks. That's the primary difference.

    Great video! I think the most methodical way to decide on the steering block is to look at the track layout: - long and flowy track -> longer wheelbase -> zero trail - tight and twisty track -> shorter wheelbase -> standard trail Then adjust the stability and turn-in characteristics with camber, toe and diff settings. Ackermann if on is feeling spicy. Everything else will change too much at once and you start to lose reference points in your setup.

    This was fantastic! I usually get a little sleepy talking computer performance but you got right down to providing useful information. I would be curious to hear your take on Vienna Ensemble Pro 7, integrating it with logic, either on one computer or networking others (using VEPRO7), and how composers with 100's of tracks/plugins can best utilize their CPU. Thank again.

    please pin this comment as I actually figured out why. some plugins are stereo and mono. even when you create a stereo track (or you think you have) you still have to change the input to the double circlce which symbolises stereo. then both sterio/mono plugins will show(all plugins basically)

    Did anyone catch all that? I got lost when he mentioned something about the rendering ZTE and coder xpc threads going into the CPU of the M2 Pro Studio and then back into the dropped framing which rendered the IUD and what was that again? And what was that about a black magic? This thing do voodoo???

    I jumped on the Apple silicon bandwagon but my i7 8700k iMac out-performs the M2 Pro in Logic, with faster USB and SSD transfer speeds too and my MBP 2015 15" gives me better performance with live guitar plugins than the M2 as well. In my opinion Intel is still king when it comes to music production.

    Thanks for this! Based on what you said I did at bit of experimentation and also realized the following: Setting up a bus before the stereo out lets you divide up the load of the "mastering chain" on two cores (eg. for example mixbus compression and saturation on the bus, and then gullfoss, tape emu and limiting on the stereo out). It actually makes a huge difference (on an M2 Macbook pro) here.
